Rhino Wood was founded in 2012 and is based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Our brand was built around our two-stage patented process of converting sustainably grown softwood into a hardwood equivalent – meaning that no natural hardwood forests are used in its production.
Using thermo heat treatment followed by full cell pressure impregnation with a non-toxic compound, the result is a wood product that is long lasting and low maintenance – and able to withstand even Africa’s harshest climates.
As a result of its sustainability efforts, Rhino Wood received the WWF climate solver award in 2014, which recognised our product as an environmental, social and economic solution to the growing demand for wood, in a world of rapidly diminishing rainforests.
Our continued market growth saw a new production facility being built in 2017. Two years later, in 2019, we joined forces with a 20-year-old timber profiling business to offer a full turnkey solution of manufacturing, finishing and distribution in Africa. Later that year, we began expanding into Europe.
Today, we employ over 40 people and are committed to the development of South Africa and the African continent. As part of this commitment, our long-term goal is to identify timber and timber modification technologies to replace natural forest timbers for all uses, without the use of harmful chemicals and plastics.
